Aurora FC Naija Opens Doors: First Training Session in Lagos

It began with twenty-three boys, a borrowed pitch in Lagos, and a shared belief that something important was starting.

On the morning of Saturday, March 1st, Aurora FC Naija held its very first official training session — and the atmosphere, by every account, was electric.

The boys arrive

Players aged between ten and sixteen came from across Lagos — some accompanied by parents, some arriving in small groups on their own, boots in hand and anticipation on their faces. Word had spread through school networks and local football clubs in the weeks prior. The response had been overwhelming: over 140 applications received for the inaugural intake, from which 23 players were selected.

What they trained

Lead coach Samuel Taiwo, who holds a CAF coaching licence and brings over a decade of youth development experience in Nigeria, led the two-hour session with a focus on fundamentals: receiving the ball under pressure, pressing triggers, and small-sided games to assess individual quality.

“What I saw today was raw, brilliant talent,” said Taiwo after the session. “These boys are hungry. They want to be coached, they want to be challenged. My job is to give them structure and belief.”

From Houston to Lagos

Aurora FC’s Houston leadership followed the session remotely via video link — a moment head coach Emmanuel Adeyemi described as “one of the most emotional things I’ve experienced in football.”

“Watching those kids train in an Aurora kit, with an Aurora badge on their chest — knowing what this club was just twelve months ago — it’s remarkable,” he said.

What’s next

Aurora FC Naija will train twice weekly going forward, with an internal tournament planned for July. Applications for the next intake open in September. Parents and guardians interested in registering a child can submit an expression of interest via the Aurora FC website.
