“Football Gave Me a Future” — Tunde’s Story from the Aurora Naija Academy

Tunde Fashola is thirteen years old. He lives in Surulere, Lagos, with his mother and two younger sisters. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, he wakes before 6am to complete his homework before school — because after school, he has training with Aurora FC Naija, and he refuses to miss it.

“My mum says football is a distraction,” Tunde says, grinning. “But I tell her: coach Samuel says we must be good students first. So I study. Then I play.”

Finding Aurora

Tunde had never played for a structured club before Aurora FC Naija. He played street football in his neighbourhood and joined the odd local kickabout, but formal coaching was beyond reach — financially and geographically.

When he heard through a friend that a club from America was starting an academy in Lagos, he didn’t fully believe it. He showed up to the trial anyway.

“I was nervous,” he admits. “There were so many boys. I thought, they will not pick me. But I just tried my best. And they called my name.”

Growing on and off the pitch

Six weeks into the programme, Tunde’s development has been rapid. Coach Taiwo has identified him as a natural deep-lying midfielder with exceptional positioning for his age. Off the pitch, his confidence has visibly grown.

“He is a quiet boy who thinks a lot,” says Taiwo. “On the pitch, he is a leader. He organises players twice his size. That is rare.”

Tunde’s mother, Mrs Fashola, was initially sceptical. Now, she attends every session she can.

“I see a difference in him,” she says simply. “He is more focused. More serious. Football gave him something to work towards. I am grateful.”
